The GPC Group, along with local partner MAPPA Systems Limited http://mappa.com.hk/ , is supporting the development of a “Common Spatial Data Infrastructure” covering the entire jurisdiction of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Over the years, many Government Bureau/Departments (B/Ds) as well as public and private organizations have been creating and using spatial data to support their daily business and have implemented different mechanisms for managing spatial data. Different formats and standards of spatial data with individual updating cycles and varying levels of accuracy have been adopted in different computer systems or Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The idea of refining the existing computer systems and GIS, and exploring ways to align and integrate spatial data, including the location and relevant information of facilities that are above, on and under the ground level in Hong Kong was initiated in the 2016-17. The current project is focused on building additional awareness and the development of detailed specifications for 7 previously identified priority data topics. This 18 month effort is being guided by a Data and Technical Standards Working Group (DTSWG), one of three sub-groups under the CSDI Sub-Committee (CSDISC). The role of the GPC Group is to bring worldwide experience in the planning, design and implementation of SDI, to take advantage of international lessons learned while working closely with the local partner and stakeholder in shaping these to the specific needs and priorities of Hong Kong.
