Abu Dhabi Airports Company GIS Development Program Phase I
Like many world class airport authorities, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has initiated an enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) that is poised to support sustainable revenue growth, cost efficiency, customer satisfaction, continued safety, and world-class security into the foreseeable future. While the GIS program has already begun to generate revenue and improve customer satisfaction, a broader effort was required to support the rapidly expanding needs of Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA) as well as the on-going operational needs of ADAC’s other four airports.
A project was initiated to assess and define the ADAC GIS requirements covering all the different operations and the development a multi-year Roadmap for the ADAC enterprise GIS program. GPC GIS, contracted for the task, leveraged its extensive expertise in providing consultancy services in multiple domains including governments, municipalities, utilities, urban planning and many others in addition to deploying the appropriate subject matter experts and applied its proven methodology to develop a comprehensive enterprise GIS roadmap for ADAC.
Based on the client’s requirements the project included developing the GIS strategic objectives; deploying a geospatial data model; defining the ADAC data requirements; data management and operations procedures and data standards; defining the required applications; defining the required integration between the various systems; defining the technical infrastructure requirements; defining the GIS operations model and the required human resources; defining capacity building requirements and corresponding training plans as well as a comprehensive implementation plan.
The major contributors to the study included the key airport divisions including, Planning and Development, Operations, Commercial properties, finance and administration.
Elements of the GIS program were specifically designed to capture information on the large, multi-billion dollar Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) infrastructure that was being developed and deploy it in a manner that will help ADAC prepare to operate and maintain the Midfield Terminal Building (MTB). Other aspects of the program support revenue generation and sustainable development of ADAC property, such as SkyCity and the Al Ain Aerospace Cluster. Others benefits include:
- Property management tools and information that will help attract the optimal mix of tenants and position them to be successful and profitable for ADAC.
- Up-to-date displays of construction activity that will help project managers, operations, safety, security, maintenance, and other stakeholders minimize disruption.
- Accurate maps of facility, inventory of equipment, and asset locations that highlight related maintenance, safety, or environmental considerations that need attention.
- Directions to help passengers, tenants, staff, and others get to where they need to be during normal, as well as, emergency situations.
- Accurate maps and data of utilities to help avoid costly breaks and change orders.
Compliance with Abu Dhabi Systems & Information Centre and other regulations.
The above benefits and others are expected to exceed program costs, based on industry practices. This does not include intangible benefits, such as improved safety and security, which often far exceed the quantifiable costs.
