Onwani Data Alignment Workshop gathers core Abu Dhabi Emirate location-based service providers

OnwaniWorkshop1An interactive training workshop on ‘Onwani’ – the new unified addressing system was conducted by the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) earlier this week, Tuesday 20th October at Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi. The main objective behind organizing this day long workshop was to apprise and educate government and core private sector entities about the ways in which each entity can utilize and align their respective addressing data to that of the new addressing system, which will gradually be implemented across the entire Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The DMA, in coordination with Abu Dhabi City, Al Ain City and Western Region Municipalities are creating a universal addressing platform so all service providers can use the same location reference.

Over 150 representatives from government departments, core private sector companies, mapping agencies and delivery personnel entities enthusiastically participated in the workshop to understand the technicality on how the new addressing system works, and what tools are available to them so that they may integrate with and align their addressing references, and develop personalized internal training as per their business needs.

Speaking about the workshop, HE Saeed Eid Al Ghafli, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs, said:  “How we reference the places we live, work and visit really matters. The smart addressing system will help the Emirate develop by adding value to people’s everyday lives, and to the daily business operation of many entities. Onwani will lay strong foundations for a vital infrastructure that uses modern GIS technology to fulfill the vision of a smart Abu Dhabi.”

The daylong workshop featured opening remarks by the Chairman followed by two elaborative sessions on Technical Data Alignment and Delivery Personnel Training.  The workshop also provided information and hands-on experience on the newly launched Onwani mobile application. The Onwani app, available for androids and iPhones via the application stores, will allow searches on the new street addresses – ‘as they become implemented’ on the ground. This app will in addition be linked to navigation via popular mapping apps such as Google Maps or allow sharing of addresses via social media like WhatsApp and Instagram. This workshop was highly recommended for HR & Training Manager, Operations, IT, Systems Manager, AD-SDI Representative & GIS Manager, in order to optimize the learning exchange from the technical training and data alignment workshop.

Onwani intends to modernize, standardize and formalize the way places are named and located across the Emirate. The technologies in the smart addressing system will not only improve emergency response time but will also minimize travel time, helping reduce environmental impact.

The DMA is spearheading the new addressing system, and it will be implemented by the Abu Dhabi Municipality, the Al Ain Municipality and the Western Region Municipality in their areas. The GPC Group supports the 'Onwani' Abu Dhabi New Unified Addressing and Wayfinding System, through the Bayanat Consortium - the prime contractor of the project to the Department of Municipal Affairs.
